Margaret Manchester is a UK-based author from County Durham, writing historical saga fiction, thrillers, and regional history inspired by North East England.
With a background in archaeology, genealogy, and local history—including work with Killhope Lead Mining Museum—her writing is rooted in real places, real lives, and the rich industrial heritage of the region.
Her historical novels are known for their strong sense of place, authentic detail, and emotionally engaging characters, often exploring the lives of ordinary people shaped by extraordinary circumstances.
Alongside her fiction, Margaret writes historical non-fiction as M. R. Manchester, focusing on regional history, ancestry, and the untold stories of the North East.
Her work reflects a lifelong interest in uncovering the past—whether through research, storytelling, or exploring the landscapes that inspire her books.
She is also the founder of Durham Hens and lives in County Durham with her husband.
When she’s not writing and researching, she enjoys cooking, spending time in her garden, and walking with her dogs.
